Smokey

Smokey Charles

Smokey Charles was born on March 5, 1986 in San Fernando, CA and passed on January 11, 2002 in Galena, Kansas

Smokey was promised to someone from the moment of her birth, But as time passed she became as much a part of me as anything ever has, she was more than a Dog, more than a Pet, she was my little baby girl and I often called her my baby when referring to her,

Everywhere that I went that it was safe for her to go, she went, never once though was she ever left in the car while I went into a building, ever,

Smokey was very protective of me, she wouldn’t walk on a leash, but it wasn’t a problem because she always stayed by my side when we walked, she sometimes would I am sure in her mind was running away from home she went to a neighbor’s house and just sat on the porch until one of us came around the corner she never went any further, and that neighbor loved it just as much as she did. Smokey also loved to have her C O O K I E S, spelled out she knew what it meant

When people would come to visit Smokey had to come and check them out, to make sure it was ok for them to be in the house, she liked just about everyone, there was one mailman she did not like, that man opened the screen door to the house and threw the mail in the door Smokey went after him, that sick mailman who knew he was not to open doors sprayed her with that mace, Poor Smokey was sick for a week and when I filled a complaint again the mailman I was told it was the dogs fault, I brought the dog to the office and said do you see any teeth on this dog, Smokey had lost almost all her teeth by that time, I did receive a formal apology from the mailman but, it wasn’t because he felt he had done something wrong, He did receive a suspension from work for 2 weeks, that was after I brought in prove that she couldn’t have hurt him, that mailman was never on our street again, it was wrong for him to open the door or any door to throw the mail in the house, ok enough about that one, I just get so mad when people treat animals bad

Smokey slept most of the way when we were driving the 3 days to our new home, we stopped often to have doggie breaks, she was one of 4 that we had with us to move, all the motels we stayed in where dog friendly we had checked before the trip started,

Smokey lived in the house in California and she stayed in the house in Kansas as well, she was fighting old age badly now, before we had moved I kept having nightmares that she would pass shortly after we moved here

On day January 11, 2002 I had left the house and Smokey in her bed, I had returned home and was sitting in the living room, mom had told me that Smokey was acting funny, I went to my room to check on her, because she was not at my feet, which she usually was, she was not in her bed, I started screaming at everyone who let her out where is she, I went outside and starting calling for her, she was totally deaf I don’t know why I thought she could hear me but I still called and called I got in the car and went everywhere I could think of to go, I walked the entire 20 acres of land to try to find her, I was just heart sick, I put up fliers the next day I still drove around looking for her, and still to this day I find myself looking for her knowing that at this point she would already be gone.

I use Jan 11 as Smokey’s death date as to the fact that is the date she disappeared, I still miss her to this day

I hope that Smokey is playing with the other furry babies awaiting their masters arrival
